A piece of Leipzig's cultural history

In his photo essay volume “Es geht sein Gang” the Leipzig photographer Bertram Kober combines his haunting black-and-white photographs from the 1980s with wordss from Erich Loest’s novel of the same name. The result is a moving document that makes the atmosphere of those years between hope, routine and melancholy palpable. Kober’s photographs show streets, people, facades – the everyday, the banal, the beautiful and the brittle at the same time. The combination with Loest’s literary realism creates a dialogue between image and word that goes far beyond the historical: a multi-layered portrait of a city and its people that shows how close past and present are still close to each other.
